Year One
Introduction to Biomedical Engineering and Design Lab
BME 1910: Design Lab 1
Focus: Biomedical Engineering Teams and Basics of Biomedical Engineering Design |
The first semester of this year was spent familiarizing ourselves with the definition of Biomedical Engineering. We went on a "hunt" for parts, identifying the acetabular cup of a hip replacement or a valve replacement for the heart, and had to reverse-engineer a medical device that was already available on the market. My group was assigned to reverse engineer the Contour Blood Glucose Meter-"glucometer" for at home use in diabetic patients. The image below is the design review presentation poster of the reverse engineering project.

BME 1920: Design Lab 2
Focus: Computer Aided Design and Biomaterials |
In the second semester, the freshman cohort is divided up into teams to solve the same overall problem, with different sub-focuses. My class was assigned to design a mobility device for an elderly patient who had suffered a stroke and thus had limited strength and dexterity. The main goal was to design a method for our user to walk without depending on the use of their hands to stand. My team was assigned to sub-focus on helping our user with using technology.
The outcome of our design was an upgraded walker with an attachment that functioned similar to the SIRI voice assistant in Apple products. More research and design would need to be completed for this device to become a novel idea. |
